Job description

The Van Swinderen Institute (VSI) of the Faculty of Science and Engineering has an opening for a Postdoc working in collaboration with Assistant Professor Daan Meerburg on aspects of analysis for upcoming cosmological datasets, as well as theoretical modeling, with a focus on the cosmic microwave background (CMB). Dr Meerburg is a newly appointed staff member (April 2019) working on topics in theoretical and observational cosmology. He is a senior member of the Simons Observatory (SO), and new ground based CMB experiment to be deployed in the Atacama desert with expected first light in Jan 2021.

Dr Meerburg is funded through a NWO Vidi grant (title: The Cosmic Laboratory). We are looking for someone who is working on different aspects of this proposal. In particular, you will take a leading role within the SO working group responsible for constraining primordial non-Gaussianities. In addition, you are encouraged to work on theoretical aspects of cosmology and collaborate with others at the VSI. The neighboring Kapteyn Institute hosts staff members directly involved in 21 cm cosmology and simulations of large scale structure. Qualifications

You have the following qualifications/qualities:

• a PhD degree in Astrophysics / Theoretical Physics / Mathematics or related areas

• knowledge of cosmology

• knowledge of at least one programming code (Python preferred but not limited to)

• very good knowledge of written and spoken English

• very good communication skills, so as to function as an excellent team player in this collaborative effort

• enthusiasm and initiative to perform creative research in an interdisciplinary setting.

Conditions of employment

We offer you in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities:

• a salary dependent on qualifications and work experience of € 2,709 maximum of € 4,274 gross per month (salary scale 10) for a full-time position

• a full-time position for one year, with a chance for further extension up to a maximum of four years

• a holiday allowance of 8% gross annual income and an 8.3% year-end bonus

• excellent secondary benefits, including a pension scheme and flexible employment conditions.
